December is here, but it's not too late!

December is here, only a few sleeps til santa. But it's still not too late to reap the benefits of the Christmas and New Year holiday. Tis the season to be lucky.

Full time staff want time off over Christmas but the station must go on. Even in local commercial stations that network a large percentage of their programmes from London there's still a need for hands on deck (or should i say desk?).

  • Pre-recorded shows might need Tech-Ops.
  • Music might need scheduling.
  • Local stations within a large network might need audio loading.
  • The office might need someone to man the phones.
  • Maybe news need someone to go out and record interviews/vox pops.
  • The PC might want someone to keep an eye on timings on NYE to make sure Big Ben hits 12 on time.

There's loads of opportunities and time's running out. You never know where a quick phone call offerring your services might get you.

Good luck, feel free to post below how you get on!

Switch on

If you have already gained some experience, learnt some skills and worked hard to spread your name, trying to get programme controllers (and alike) to talk about you and offer you some work make sure you have a mobile phone which is switched ON. Always. Never turned off. Always by your side and controlling your life (just as the likes of Nokia dream of).

When someone has called in sick or the studio phones go into meltdown programme controllers need someone who is reliable, savy and enthusiastic like no other. They'll need someone to say 'yes' pretty quick, this is where your persistence will pay off. If, however, your phone is switched off when they ring or your mates answer taking the piss, you've missed your shot. In their urgency they'll ring the next reliable, keen and enthusiastic person (because trust me...there's alot of them to contend with).

So your mobile phone should always be switched on. Make sure its on at 5.59am just as the breakfast show realise that the assistant producer is off sick today.

Have a clear and professional answer message. No "Yo Bitch, me isn't answering the phone innit, so holla after the beep" or playing songs into the phone answer machine (i hate that!).

When they do get through to you; be polite but not un-naturally, friendly and KEEN. Don't say "oh sorry but i'm going out to get pissed that night", be eager to put off other plans to help them out. If you have major commitments they will understand but atleast offer or explain. If you can't do it because of something else that you really can't cancel make it obvious that you're gutted and that if there was a way you could do it you really would. You need to be available everytime they need you and keen to go out your way to help them.

Finally, if they leave a message on your answer machine; REPLY! Ring them back straightaway otherwise the opportunity could well be gone.

Jays Quick Tip

Spread your wings...Be multi-talented. If you can help cover an on air show when they're stuck on a Friday night or film and edit a short video of an event for the website you'll be useful to have around and will give off the signs of eagerness.

Things looking up?

Looking to gain work experience? Global Radio have launched The Global Academy offering work experience and internships. For more information visit: http://www.thisisglobal.com/radio/global-academy/

However if anything like the BBC application process you may not always get the response you hoped for so don't forget about contacting stations directly. A member of staff at a local BBC radio station once told me that often applications sent via the website are not always the best route. Instead he advised to find a producer or presenter who probably doesn't get regular requests for work experience (maybe the late night presenter) and ask if you can give them a hand. But remember that it's not their job to give you work experience and they're very busy people so be very appreciative of any response you receive.

Beware of the toes!

There's nothing worse than when you've just brought a nice shiny new pair of shoes and the first step they take, you get someone step onto your big toe. When i was at school i remember some kids would stamp on your shoes when they saw that you had brought new ones...Kids can be so cruel. Infact while i'm on the subject of brutal feet attacks...i was in Asda the other night looking for the bloody egg aisle when some donut rams their trolley in my heel. Still hurts now!

But the idea of this post isn't to make you a more considerate supermarket shopper (although to kill two birds with one stone is always nice). I was inspired to write this post whilst out in a club on Saturday night. I was walking from the toilet, the bar was full and trying to get to the other side of the room was kinda like trying to get to the front of a Take That gig after turning up ten minutes late. I accidently stood on some poor girls feet, she was the smallest timide girl you've ever seen and ofcourse she was wearing shoes that consisted of some tiny string tied around holding on a sole to the underneath of her foot, so a fat knacker like me stepping on her foot paralysed her...not literally, there was no need for an Ambulance but she did pull one of those 'Ouch, that f-ing hurts you donut' faces.

So now you know where the inspiration has come from here's the content and i think it applies for whether your just doing some work experience or your the Programme Controller. Don't step on anyones toes. This is something i think is too easy to do, especially when your new and your just being really enthusiastic and trying to impress.

In the past it's often been said me to that you've got to look really keen when doing work experience, 'offer help in anyway you can think of' they would say. I think it's important to show that your keen but remember that these people giving you the work experience have a job to hold onto, bills to pay, kids to support and new Ted Baker shirts to buy. If they feel threatened by you you'll soon find yourself in the dark.

I'm not saying don't be keen, i think it's good to regularly say 'I don't mind doing that for you' but just bear it in mind.

Again any views feel free to contribute! And if you have a question, want to write a guest post or add your coments send me an email!

Back from the Dead

I knew it had been a long time since my last posting but crikey November?? A lot has happened since then. Christmas was just a blur for me, loads of DJing work came in at last minute which allowed me to earn some money and the stations that I freelance(d) for had loads of stuff going on so I was able to get involved in some fun on air stuff.

The Global Radio recruitment ban was also lifted which meant that a few vacancies were advertised, particularly at the stations that are going to see a merge into the Heart brand. I was fortunate to get one of these positions which means that I have moved home and settled into my first full time radio gig. The worries of not getting paid when you fall ill have been removed from my life (for now) but so has the flexibility of having a day off when you feel like it. Which gives me an idea for a future post; Freelance Vs Staff.

Anyway starting this new job is great news, not only for me but hopefully for the blog. I’m learning loads and I hope that I can continue to write out what I learn as I go on in my career. I’m reading Gordon Ramsay’s Humble Pie at the moment which is a great read. It’s encouraging to hear that through many years of hard work, continuous self improvement it is possible to reach and exceed your goal. How that man kept joining new kitchens starting from the bottom every time to become the pro he is now is amazing and motivational to read, I highly suggest you get a copy of this book.

Since my last post I’ve received a few emails from readers of this blog, which is great! A few have been asking some good questions about how they can reach their career ambitions. I am working towards answering their questions and might post their questions on here incase you have the answer or some tips.
